Despite the French name (meaning “like boys”), avant-garde label Comme des Garcons originated in Tokyo, Japan. Founder and designer Rei Kawakubo first caught the attention of the fashion world with her debut Paris show in 1981, where she stunned French fashion critics with her unique vision of a distressed, asymmetrical, and largely monochromatic wardrobe in a futuristic collection that relied predominately on the color black. In the years since, the label’s embraced a wider color palette but kept the edgy, progressive spirit that makes it stand out from the rest of the pack. Lucky Londoners get to visit the CDG emporium at the Dover Street Market, but until you get there, you can buy online at shops like Yoox.
